CIBC Securities Inc. index funds
An index fund is a mutual fund that aims to track the performance of a specific stock or bond index (such as the S&P/TSX Composite Index). Indexing is referred to as “passive management” because unlike “active management”, whose goal is to outperform a particular index, indexing does not rely on the ability of a fund manager to pick securities.
Index funds don't rely on fund managers to pick investments, so they generally have lower management fees and trading costs than actively managed funds. The securities held in index funds are also traded less frequently — which means capital gains are largely deferred until you sell the fund, giving you control over your own taxes.
